Erika Hoff will present two lectures based on studies of the bilingual development of children born in the United States and living in Spanish-speaking homes, including a 10-year longitudinal study which followed children from 2 1/2 to 12 years. The findings thus provide an account of simultaneous minority-majority bilingual development.

The data describe common patterns and individual differences in bilingual development; they identify internal and external factors that shape trajectories of bilingual development, and they reveal some of the language learning processes that underlie both monolingual and bilingual development. Implications for theory, for parenting, and for educational policy will be discussed.
